Calcium Phosphate/Demineralized Bone Matrix Performance in a Rabbit Posterolaterial Lumbar Arthrodesis Model

ثبت نشده
چکیده

INTRODUCTION: Synthetic calcium phosphate cements (CPC) which mimic the chemical structure of the mineral composition of bone have been well accepted as bone grafting materials due to their consistent osteoconductivity, ease of use, and mechanical properties but are limited in application due to their lack of osteoinductive potential. Demineralized Bone Matrix (DBM) has also found significant acceptance as a bone grafting material but is limited in application due to its lack of mechanical properties and inconsistent performance. An optimized graft material would combine the consistency, mechanical properties and osteoconductivity of calcium phosphate cements with the osteoinductive potential of DBM.

Bone grafting options for lumbar spine surgery: a review examining clinical efficacy and complications

BACKGROUND Iliac crest harvest has been considered the "gold standard" at producing successful arthrodesis of the lumbar spine but is also associated with many donor-site morbidities. Many alternatives have been used to avoid iliac crest harvest, including autologous bone from other donor sites, allogeneic bone, ceramics, and recombinant human bone morphogenetic proteins (rhBMPs). This review w...

Graft options in posterolateral and posterior interbody lumbar fusion.

STUDY DESIGN Review article, review of literature. OBJECTIVE To review the bone graft options that exist for posterolateral and posterior interbody lumbar fusion. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA As the number of lumbar fusion surgeries has increased over the last decade, alternative methods of grafting have been developed. Iliac crest autograft bone has traditionally been used for lumbar fusion....

The Role of Intraoperative Bone Marrow Aspirate Stem Cell Concentration as a Bone Grafting Technique

Despite the recapitulative nature of bone, a large percentage of nonunions still occur. Many exogenous substances have been administered to aid in the arthrodesis process, yet few have proven efficacious relative to time and cost. With recent advancements in bone biology involving cellular and molecular signaling, it is now possible to selectively retain bone progenitor cells from a patient’s b...

Simple carrier matrix modifications can enhance delivery of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 for posterolateral spine fusion.

STUDY DESIGN A nonhuman primate lumbar intertransverse process arthrodesis model was used to evaluate modifications to a plain collagen sponge to deliver recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2). OBJECTIVES To evaluate the feasibility of enhancing the delivery of rhBMP-2 with the established collagen sponge carrier by adding biphasic ceramic phosphate (BCP) granules (15% hydro...

Role of Bone Grafts and Bone Graft Substitutes in Isolated Subtalar Joint Arthrodesis

OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to compare union rates for isolated subtalar arthrodesis with and without the use of bone grafts or bone graft substitutes. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed 135 subtalar fusions with a mean follow-up of 18 ± 14 months. The standard approach was used for all surgeries. Graft materials included b-tricalcium phosphate, demineralized bone matrix, iliac ...
